Time for prints

TFP (time for prints) is an alternative to professional photography that will cost you nothing at all.
You will need to find a photographer who is willing to do this, s/he will photograph you and in return will give you a few prints, or a disk with digital images on it. The difficulty with this arrangement is that the photographer may be doing it for experience, in which case you may not get very good photos out of it.

Some of the TFP people are good though, they may be highly skilled photographers who are able and prepared to do a proper job in return for your time and cooperation. My own commercial studio provides TFP, very occasionally - the model ends up with a complete professional portfolio and in return spends a whole day in our studio being photographed with a range of products. The photos may eventually be used in our client's brochures, so it's a win-win situation for everyone.
We have also written detailed tutorials on various types of photography, and I provided a TFP portfolio for the models used in them so that I could get some shots showing how to light and pose people.

Mostly though, TFP helps the photographer more than the model. A lot of new models seem to go the rounds of photographers who supply TFP and end up with an enormous number of photos, many of which are useless!

Our advice, if you're offered TFP, is to ask the photographer how many prints you will get, and what size they will be. And if you are offered the photos on disk, make sure that they will be suitable for printing (small, low-resolution files are only suitable for internet use).

cannot guarantee that everyone who links to our site is honest and trustworthy. Unlike some other advice sites, we will not recommend any modelling agencies or photographers. The reason for this is that our advice, which is completely impartial, would be useless if we had to worry about upsetting advertisers.
